As per the Australian Dental Association (ADA) guidelines, it is recommended to visit your dentist at least every 6 to 12 months for a regular check-up and cleaning with x-rays and OPG taken every 2-3 years to assess and manage any non-visible conditions.

Gum infections or periodontal disease is the inflammation of the gums. Early signs of gum inflammation, (gingivitis), are red, bleeding gums. Gingivitis can usually be treated successfully by removal of plaque and calculus and the maintenance of daily brushing and flossing. Advanced stages of gum disease left untreated can cause serious damage, gum recession and loss of bony support resulting in tooth loss.

Please contact us as soon as possible to advise us if you have a dental emergency.

We allocate emergency times between 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm. We will do our best to offer you an emergency time with the first available dentist or work you into our schedule at other times.

During normal working hours please contact our dental surgery on (03) 9370 9118.

If the baby tooth is fairly loose, give it a week or two to come out on its own. This is quite a normal and common appearance and there is no need to panic, as the eruption path of the second tooth is usually this way. If the tooth is not loose and your child has discomfort and pain, make an appointment to be seen at our dental surgery in Moonee Ponds.

The first visit should be by 1-3 years of age when the teeth are developing. An informal visit with the parents on their regular 6 or 12 monthly appointment will make them feel more comfortable.

Baby teeth maintain the space needed in the jaws as they develop, so they act as “placeholders” for the eruption of the permanent teeth. If a primary tooth is lost too early, adjacent teeth tend to drift and fill the gap. Then the permanent tooth could lose its place and erupt misaligned or fail to erupt at all.

Knocked out permanent teeth require immediate attention. Recover the tooth and if dirty, gently rinse the tooth under milk holding it by the crown (not the root), then immediately reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place with a clean gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, carry the tooth in saline or milk solution immediately to a dentist. Seek immediate dental treatment for assessment and stabilisation of the tooth.

Various situations can cause tooth pain, including sensitivity, ulcers, swelling or abscess, cracked or broken teeth. For extreme pain or any swelling seek dental treatment within 24 hours.

Any extreme pain associated with a broken tooth, please contact the surgery.

Various factors can lead to a broken tooth, including biting on hard foods such as nuts, seeds and lollies. Stress on a tooth, uneven chewing pressure, an accident such as a blow to the mouth. Most common broken teeth can be repaired, once assessed with restoration materials.
