Are clear aligners suitable for adults with moderate crowding?

Yes—clear aligners are often a very good option for adults with moderate crowding, as long as the bite and jaw are otherwise suitable and you can wear them as instructed.

When aligners work well for moderate crowding

  • Many systems (such as Invisalign and similar brands) are designed to treat mild to moderate crowding by gradually creating space and aligning the teeth.
  • They are particularly suitable when crowding is mainly about tooth position (3–5 mm of crowding), and there are no major jaw discrepancies or very complex bite problems.

Situations where braces may be better

  • If the crowding is severe, there are large bite issues (like a deep overbite or big overjet), impacted teeth, or significant jaw imbalance, fixed braces can give the orthodontist more precise control.
  • Even with moderate crowding, if you are unlikely to wear aligners 20–22 hours a day, braces may be recommended because they are always working while on the teeth.

What an adult should consider

  • Suitability depends on a full assessment: your dentist or orthodontist will check crowding amount, bite, gum health and bone levels, then advise whether clear aligners alone can give a predictable result or if braces (or a combination) are safer.
  • If you are looking for a discreet option, have moderate crowding and are committed to wearing aligners as directed, you are often an excellent candidate as an adult.
